Recognizing the need to transform

When Maureen Data visited Riverside to envision digital transformation, it became clear to Riverside that becoming truly cloud-first would best serve the firm’s long-term interests.

Implementing a holistic approach

Maureen Data collaborated with Riverside to asses all benefits and blockers of its server migration and were with them every step of the way through implementation.

Repeating a successful journey

Riverside is now fully migrated to its new cloud environment and is experiencing firsthand the operational flexibility afforded by cloud services while extending these benefits to its partner organizations.

Overcoming the challenges associated with becoming a cloud-first organization

The Riverside Company is a global private equity firm focused on investments in growing businesses. Since its founding in 1988, Riverside has invested in more than 530 transactions, and the firm’s international portfolio includes more than 80 companies across the world.

When the Riverside Company first approached Maureen Data, its ask was simple: implement Windows 10 across the firm in order to modernize the technology at its disposal while avoiding any impact that would be caused by the end of extended support for Windows 7.

But when Maureen Data first visited the customer to envision what was possible, it became clear to Riverside that a full cloud transformation would best serve the firm’s long-term interests.

“As we started to have the conversation around Windows 10, we highlighted how the technology paradigm has shifted to a service-oriented approach. Riverside liked the idea of Windows as a continually updated and managed service. What started as a Windows 10 conversation very quickly became a conversation regarding how we could replace Riverside’s on-premises systems and allow the customer to become a truly cloud-first organization,” said Michael Trachtenberg, CTO of Maureen Data Systems.

Building a repeatable approach to adopting transformational services

With a change in its mission, the team from Maureen Data Systems worked to identify all of the potential blockers standing in the way of Riverside’s transformation. The team from Maureen Data Systems conducted an initial assessment over the course of three days. From that assessment, the team was able to identify the five primary blockers that stood in the way of the customer’s transformation while also identifying any downstream applications that depended on the systems identified as blockers. “The blockers we identified with Riverside were similar to those we had seen in other organizations looking to move to the cloud—they were running on-premises Active Directory, had on-premises servers, and were reliant on applications that depended on those on-premises systems,” said Michael Fiorito, Executive VP of Maureen Data Systems.

From there, the team identified and contrasted the total cost per year associated with the customer’s on-premises systems and highlighted the possible savings the customer would experience. Following this initial envisioning phase, implementation began in earnest.

Achieving true organizational flexibility in the cloud

After spending three days envisioning Riverside’s new environment, the team at Maureen Data Systems was able to complete the rest of the project over a four-month period—an impressive feat, given the thousands of users affected.

“We moved the customer to an online file system using SharePoint and OneDrive while working to ensure user adoption. In parallel, we set up the infrastructure needed to roll out Windows 10, configured security politics for Enterprise Mobility Services (EMS), and defined application-level access for users,” said Michael Trachtenberg, CTO of Maureen Data Systems.

Riverside is now fully migrated to its new cloud environment and is experiencing firsthand the operational flexibility afforded by cloud services. What’s more, Riverside has been able to apply the learnings from its own transformation to the organizations with which it partners.

“Riverside invests in companies and allows them to operate independently, while offering guidance on HR, operations, finance, and now technology. Throughout the engagement, we approached Riverside’s transformation with a methodological approach that was designed to scale to these downstream businesses. Now, Riverside can reproduce this model themselves and enable these partner organizations with modern technologies and a true cloud-first mentality.”

As a result of this successful partnership, the team from Maureen Data Systems has been invited to speak regarding digital transformation at Riverside’s annual conference. Using the learnings from the engagement, Maureen Data Systems has developed a repeatable approach that has already been implemented to tremendous success among the firm’s other customers.
