Genetec security for Special Olympics

The Genetec team connected the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD’s) command post across multiple sites to monitor over 400 video cameras by using federation as a service (FaaS), a highly scalable cloud service running on Microsoft Azure.

"Normally at our command posts, we rely heavily on the radio, but radio can only give you a verbal description of what is happening on the ground. With real-time video, everyone had a direct view of what was happening and everyone was on the same page."

Commander Dennis Kato, LAPD Planning Group, Special Olympics World Games Organizing Committee

The LAPD is the third-largest municipal police department in the United States. It needed a comprehensive security solution for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. The event brought together 500,000 spectators, 30,000 volunteers, and 16,500 athletes in Los Angeles. The LAPD was able to minimize onsite hardware and simplify the process for managing a central monitoring system by using the Genetec FaaS solution, a highly scalable cloud service that runs on Microsoft Azure. The Genetec FaaS helped the LAPD provide a safe and secure environment for the 12-day event. Now, the LAPD is considering a similar structure as it upgrades the citywide surveillance infrastructure.
