When a British multinational oil and gas company embarked on an ambitious program to rapidly reduce its carbon footprint and drive cost improvements, it sought help from Data Dynamics to consolidate and migrate its global datacenters to Microsoft Azure. The timing and complexity of the task was daunting. The client, one of the world’s largest integrated oil and gas companies, operating in more than 100 countries, needed the migration work to be done quickly with minimal downtime. Any significant delay would cost it tens of millions of dollars in operating costs because the on-premises datacenter leases needed to be renewed. Every approach the customer had tried thus far had failed because of performance, scale, loss of metadata/security, or complexity.
As a long-standing Microsoft partner, the Data Dynamics team was well-equipped to take on this challenge. Utilizing the Azure File Migration Program and Data Dynamics' StorageX solution
they successfully migrated 600 terabytes of data in 20 days, saving the client millions of dollars in datacenter closure costs. The Azure File Migration Program makes it possible to migrate tens of terabytes to several petabytes of data files with distributed copy engines, centralized control, and automated processes. There is no need for scripting, babysitting processes, or difficult troubleshooting.

Consolidating and migrating data from disparate storage infrastructure at no cost through the Azure File Migration Program, along with enhanced data protection and automation, resulted in a 15X increase in productivity, while costs were reduced by 75 percent. The client’s digital-first initiative and cloud adoption strategy has also helped it grow its low carbon energy projects by 400 percent and reduce operational emissions by 35 percent, allowing it to march forward on the road to net zero.
