Adopting iNAS SmartContract for AI Diagnostic assistance and medical recordkeeping

Medical imaging centers face efficiency and accuracy issues

In the Chinese healthcare market there is currently a shortage of radiologists and pathologists, and the diagnostic tasks they perform can be both difficult and time consuming. This work can take upwards of three hours, with misdiagnosis rates, according to the Chinese Medical Association, of 27.8 percent all-up. Trinity Medical Imaging Centre in Hong Kong handles more than 200 outpatients per day for radiology imaging consultancy services. Looking to improve diagnostic outcomes while managing patient data more efficiently, Trinity turned to Unissoft Technology Ltd. for a solution.

iNAS SmartContract improves the diagnostic process

Unissoft’s iNAS SmartContract solution, built on Azure and leveraging blockchain technology, was implemented to help ease the burden on Trinity Medical Imaging Centre’s radiologists and staff. iNAS SmartContract is capable of providing diagnostic assistance and allows Trinity Medical Centre to store electronic medical records (EMR) on the cloud—leveraging blockchain-based eSignature features to verify and protect patient data.

Driving efficiencies and delivering dramatic cost savings

iNAS SmartContract provides an active learning framework that combines a fully convolutional network (FCN) and active learning to make judicious diagnostic suggestions. The solution reviews thousands of studies and assists physicians in making proper diagnoses, significantly increasing radiologist efficiency and reducing the number of misdiagnoses and physician stress. iNAS SmartContract currently has two developed AI diagnostics assistance sub-systems, one for lung and one for breast cancer, which are further trained as more data is fed into iNAS SmartContract.

Headquartered in Beijing and Hong Kong, Microsoft Gold Partner Unissoft’s iNAS blockchain solutions are leaders in cybersecurity, electronic recordkeeping (ERK), and enterprise content management (ECM). Unissoft is the winner of the 2018 IAMCP Global Partner-to-Partner Awards Program, a finalist for the 2017 Microsoft Corp Mobile App Development Partner of the Year award, and the winner of the 2016 Microsoft Hong Kong SMB Cloud Solution Partner of the Year award.

Medical imaging centers face challenges of staffing, efficiency, and accuracy

In the Chinese healthcare market, the annual demand for medical imaging roughly increases at a 30 percent rate year-over-year while the number of radiologists only increases at a rate of five percent year-over-year. In the case of pathologists, the number of officially registered doctors would need to increase by a factor of five in order to meet current demand. Diagnosing patients can be a time-consuming and difficult process that takes anywhere from five minutes to upwards of three hours, with misdiagnosis rates, according to the Chinese Medical Association, at an alarming 27.8 percent all-up.

Another major challenge facing physicians and clinicians today is an overload of patient information. This rapid accumulation of electronic data has ballooned due to the advent of EMRs and the capture of patient data that was not previously recorded. In light of this massive increase in private patient information, concerns regarding the secure storage and privacy of health records have increased.

Trinity Medical Imaging Centre in Hong Kong handles more than 200 outpatients per day for radiology imaging consultancy services. Trinity turned to Unissoft for a solution to aid in both the diagnostic process as well as with its handling of patient data.

iNAS SmartContract implemented to improve the diagnostic process and help save lives

The iNAS SmartContract solution, built on Azure and leveraging blockchain technology, was implemented to help ease the burden on Trinity Medical Imaging Centre’s radiologists and staff.

iNAS SmartContract provides a deep active learning framework that combines an FCN and active learning to make judicious diagnostic suggestions and significantly reduce medical professional’s efforts. The solution reviews thousands of studies from archives to assist in making proper diagnoses and increase radiologist efficiency while reducing the number of misdiagnoses. iNAS SmartContract currently has two developed AI Diagnostics Assistance Sub-systems, one for lung cancer and one for breast cancer, each of which are trained further as more data is fed into the solution.

In addition to diagnostic assistance, iNAS SmartContract helps Trinity Medical Centre stay at the forefront of cloud-based EMRs. Medical records are stored on the cloud and blockchain-based eSignature features protect patient privacy while verifying digital medical records for authenticity.

“One of the biggest contributions deep learning and Artificial Intelligence will make to me as a radiologist is not directly helping with image interpretation, but in bringing relevant information out of the electronic medical records and presenting it in a meaningful way to better inform my clinical judgment… It not only will streamline my workflow but also will be a major step towards more personalized medicine in radiology.”
