Environmental Sustainability at Microsoft
Microsoft’s Carbon Commitment
We are taking responsibility for our own carbon footprint by reducing our emissions by half and then removing the rest. Shifting to 100% renewable energy, extending the carbon fee to our supply and value chains, and investing in new carbon reduction and removal technology through a $1 billion Climate Innovation Fund.
Microsoft refurbishers specialize in professionally and safely decommissioning PCs through asset recycling. It is important your computer is disposed of professionally and safely so your data is not compromised.
Safe disposal of technology devices is important to safeguarding the data stored or accessed from technology devices. Security breaches can plague consumers and businesses and results in untold economic and personal impact. Decommissioning devices with data security in mind cannot be overlooked when disposing of technology.
Production and disposal of electronics has such a huge environmental impact. Microsoft, along with other technology leaders and worldwide organizations, recognizes the problem of end-of-life management for technology devices and the complexities and challenges for consumers when dealing with it. They are committed to the recovery and recycling of the useful materials in our products and keeping them out of landfills at the end of their life cycle.

Every refurbished device from a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher includes a specially designed Windows Certificate of Authenticity label (COA) OR Genuine Microsoft Refurbisher label (GMRL) OR Genuine Microsoft label (GML) affixed to the chassis.
Image 1 (L to R): MAR COA has the statement “For use on a Refurbished PC – No Commercial Value” and includes the brand name of the refurbisher who refurbished it and pre-installed Windows on the computer. There is a 25 digit product key on the label, some with security coating covering them.
Image 2: If the MAR device has a digital Windows license on it, the COA label has been replaced by a GMRL sticker.
Both labels have holographic images. The GMRL is new and will be utilized by all MARs and TPRs. It has “Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher” text in the center box. If your device has this label, it has a pre-installed digital product key and will self-activate. One of these 2 items (Refurbisher COA, and GMRL label) are proof that the computer is properly licensed.
Microsoft Authorized Refurbishers do not include recovery media supplied on DVDs with refurbished PC purchases. Customers who buy a refurbished PC will have another option to access a recovery image if they need it. The most common methods are to download the Windows image from the internet or in some cases, you may have access the recovery image that is available on the hard drive of the computer. The customer may be prompted to create their own recovery media. You can learn more about making your own system backup here.
MAR Program currently offers operating systems Window 10 Home and Windows 10 Professional and Office 365 - 30-day trial for consumers and businesses. The program also offers licenses for not-for-profit recipients (including education), which includes Windows 10 Professional and Microsoft Office 2019. Note: Office is only available to those recipients who are part of a Technology Access Program.
