Unboxed transforms enterprise learning with AI and Microsoft Azure

With scalable learning programs and an automated, accelerated coaching platform, Unboxed is helping Fortune 500 and other companies level up their workforce at market speed.

December 3, 2025

Skill development in an era of rapid change and innovation is an urgent, complex challenge for enterprise leaders around the globe. As market pressures change the way businesses operate, employees are often expected to adapt quickly to new roles and expectations. At the same time, resources to upskill employees at speed and scale are scarce.

Unboxed, a Microsoft partner based in Richmond, Virginia, has spent more than 16 years helping Fortune 500 companies meet that challenge. The team specializes in skill-based learning and development, with a focus on what they call “Skill Agility”™—the ability to build and apply new skills at the pace of business change. The Unboxed Skill Building Platform, built entirely on Microsoft Azure, integrates AI-powered roleplay, coaching, and compliance validation to deliver personalized, scalable training across distributed teams.

“We exist to help companies build skills faster, smarter, and adapt quicker through skill agility,” said Dave Romero, President of Unboxed. The company’s tools and training are engineered to help their customers achieve thorough, rapid training in fast-moving environments, and their innovations have been a boon to pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, banking, and other businesses.

Assessing the skilling needs of global enterprises

Unboxed’s customers face a common set of challenges. Traditional training methods such as live meetings, peer roleplay, and static e-learning can be difficult for trainees to translate into real-world application. Employees are often hired, given a bit of training, and then begin working with customers, leading to unpredictable results.

Coaching presents its own unique hurdles. While hands-on mentorship is widely recognized as a driver of performance, managers often lack the time or tools to deliver consistent, structured feedback. In industries like life sciences, coaching can mean spending an entire day shadowing a field rep and writing up a detailed report—a process that can be both exhausting and inefficient.

“Writing those coaching reports takes a lot of time,” said Rebecca Nittolo, VP of Client Strategy and Innovation at Unboxed. “You have to think through how to say something, make sure it’s in the right format, and ensure it’s actionable. It’s challenging and very time-consuming.”

In heavily regulated industries, accuracy in coaching and training is also paramount. Organizations must ensure that employees are delivering compliant messaging, especially in high-stakes conversations. And for a lot of Unboxed clients who operate globally across time zones, that scale can make it difficult to deliver consistent training and coaching. As organizations expand, they need tools that can support distributed teams without compromising quality or security.

Coaching, compliance, and skill development at scale

To address these challenges, Unboxed built the Skill Building Platform on Microsoft Azure. The platform combines learning, practice, and coaching into a single ecosystem that’s designed to help employees build skills continuously. AI-powered, scenario-based roleplaying opportunities provide trainees with a wealth of experience before they ever dive into live interactions.

“Skill development isn’t new, but traditional approaches haven’t kept pace with the speed of business, constant reorganizations, and ongoing economic pressures,” said Dave Romero, founder and president of Unboxed.

“One-on-one practice and coaching are difficult to scale, and canned simulations fail to prepare teams for real-world complexity. Our AI-driven coaching and roleplay capabilities, powered by Microsoft, provide the scalable force multiplier global teams need to enhance human-to-human interactions and accurately measure skill readiness.”

For regulated industries, Unboxed developed FactChecker™ AI, which validates messaging against approved content. This reinforces compliance during training and reduces risk in high-stakes conversations.

At the heart of the solution is Mentor, an AI roleplay tool that simulates realistic conversations and provides adaptive feedback. With the tool, employees can practice robust scenarios multiple times and receive targeted coaching for improvement.

Powered by the Microsoft AI suite, Mentor has been deployed by enterprise organizations as a powerful and efficient replacement or supplement for traditional training events. According to the team, the tool has generated rapid ROI and made an immediate impact on the enterprises that used it.

“Instead of spending a full day doing one roleplay in front of a manager, learners can now practice several times, get feedback, and send their best version for review,” said Nittolo. “We’ve seen people do [up to] nine roleplays in a 30-minute session. That’s a huge increase in practice time.” According to Nittolo, Mentor has brought new employees up to full-skill strength in just one week, as opposed to more traditional leveling-up that can take up to six weeks.

For a company like Axalta, which specializes in high-precision industrial and automotive coatings and does business around the world, the demand for training opportunities was significant. In a 2021 engagement survey, nearly 13,000 Axalta employees across 140 countries were eager for tools and resources to support their growth and development—which is exactly what Unboxed delivered.

“The Unboxed platform has been instrumental in helping us transform learning at Axalta,” said Chris Leady, Director of Global Talent Management at Axalta. “It enabled us to launch and scale training programs globally with speed and consistency, while offering over 4,000 learning modules across a wide range of topics—from manager development and professional growth to curated learning journeys, podcasts, and more.”

Another key component of the Unboxed Skill Building Platform is Coach, which uses Azure AI to automate coaching reports. Unboxed developed this component of the solution after a client shared that managers weren’t coaching consistently. The team collaborated with the client to fine-tune the solution and develop a consistent coaching framework.

“It takes a lot of time to really think through, ‘How do I want to write this, how do I want to say something,’ making sure you write it in the right format and structure and making sure you’re giving actionable feedback,“ said Nittolo. “There was a 40% increase in coaching efficiency because the managers now had an AI tool to help them write the feedback.”

All tools are hosted on Microsoft Azure, leveraging its trusted stack for enterprise-grade security, privacy, and compliance. The scalability of Azure allows Unboxed to support global deployments, while its AI capabilities enable rapid iteration and innovation. “Microsoft’s trusted AI tech stack was critical to our success. Not only does it enable us to be compliant with AI governance committees in regulated industries like Life Sciences, but it also enables us to live up to the high expectations of global companies,” said Romero.

Faster onboarding, better coaching, and measurable skill growth

The Unboxed platform is delivering measurable results across multiple industries. The partnership with Axalta, for example, led to the creation of a scalable, unified global learning experience that delivered content in nine languages.

“Thanks to our partnership with Unboxed, we’ve empowered our people with the resources they asked for, and we’ve built a learning culture that supports career development at every level of the organization,” said Leady. “Year after year, Unboxed has proven to be a trusted partner in evolving our learning strategy, enhancing our technology, and driving meaningful impact for our employees and business."

Many Unboxed customers report faster onboarding, more consistent coaching, and improved performance. The platform’s low latency and seamless integration with Microsoft tools like Power BI and Azure OpenAI make it easy to deploy and scale, leading to further wins like these:

  • A biomedicine company achieved a 20% increase in skill growth and development among field representatives, driven by automated, AI-generated insights integrated with Coach.
  • At another company, 92% of participants reported increased confidence in navigating stakeholder conversations, attributing the improvement to dynamic, personalized AI roleplays.
  • Leveraging AI-enabled roleplays at one organization led to a 40% reduction in the need for live coaching, saving the company both time and resource allocation.

With capabilities like HD voice-to-text, dynamic feedback, and seamless enterprise integration, Unboxed is building toward a future where AI-powered practice and coaching are essential parts of an enterprise toolkit. “The technology is growing all the time,” said Nittolo. “Because of our partnership with Microsoft, we’re able to continually evolve the tools and services we provide.”
