How can you leverage Open Source Software to deliver Cloud services in a multi-option market?

The Cloud loves open source. Many of the operating systems and server applications that are developed in the Cloud run based on open source programming methods that are shared and accessible to all developers.

When your business is all about delivering Cloud services that address the needs of global customers, no matter the programming language, operating system, tool or framework they use, building open source-based software becomes a strong competitive advantage. As Jim Zemlin, executive director at Linux Foundation, has said “shared development is enabling faster development with higher quality and lower costs. This is causing the software value chain to change.”

Microsoft and open source software

According to GitHub, the biggest repository and community for open source projects, last year Microsoft was the organization with the most open source contributors, surpassing open source advocates like Facebook or Google.

Open source software is a powerful way to advance software development and share data for experimentation. Microsoft is well aware of this and has really embraced open source, leaving the choice up to the customer. They are now involved with 140 workgroups dealing with open standards, and actively supports more than 400 projects where code is written before being given back to the community.

Building and selling services based on open source has become increasingly important for Azure Cloud growth, and has also made Azure accessible for others' open-source-based software applications.

The perfect conversation starter

It no longer matters which programming language you speak. It really doesn't have to be just .NET anymore and you can also code in Java or PHP. Microsoft ensures you can run everything any way and in any location you want, including business-critical enterprise workloads running on Red Hat and other Linux-based infrastructure.

Whether that's in an on-premises data center, a service provider's data center, or one of Microsoft's data centers, it's all about freedom of choice for the customer and taking a hybrid Cloud approach.

Azure and Open Source Software can be a perfect conversation starter if you are selling Cloud services. This is not without reason - you can easily run numerous solutions on the Microsoft Cloud service. Driving an open source workload conversation can help you engage with customers and lead to significant increase in your Azure consumption.

Red Hat solutions for Azure customers

Microsoft Azure is also a Red Hat Certified Cloud and Service Provider. This means customers will be able to run their Red Hat Enterprise Linux applications and workloads on Microsoft Azure.

Red Hat Cloud Access subscribers can take their virtual machines with them to run in Microsoft Azure. Microsoft Azure customers benefit from Red Hat's application platform, including Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, Red Hat JBoss Web Server, Red Hat Gluster Storage, and OpenShift, Red Hat's platform-as-a-service offering.
